![]() ![]() Take note developers of the nameless game this is how you tell the first part of a larger story. ![]() Unlike another recent release that shall remain nameless, it manages to be the beginning of a larger narrative while still remembering that it has to tell a coherent, satisfying story in its own right. Sidebar rant: Shadow of Mordor feels very much like the first chapter of a larger story, whether it’s played out in DLC or is (hopefully) the beginning of a franchise. Within the first ten minutes I was invested in the story and that investment lasted me through until the very end. What I can tell you is that the story is gripping from start to finish, expertly told with a satisfying beginning, middle and end. I’ve read The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, I’ve seen the movies, and that’s it. Tolkein’s Middle Earth to be able to comment on how well the game stays within the boundaries of established continuity. I am in no way familiar enough with the lore of J.R.R. He is resurrected by an unknown force and becomes tied to an amnesiac spirit, together they must figure out why they’re not at rest, which requires them to fight their way through the Orc forces of Mordor to get some answers from the Black Hand. In it you play as Talion, a Ranger of Gondor who is ritually sacrificed during an attack by the Black Hand. The game takes place between The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor is an open-world action game set in the Lord of the Rings universe, developed by Monolith Productions (FEAR, Condemed: Criminal Origins) and published by WB Games. It’ll be interesting how that might affect sales (also what effect the thirty-seven other games being released in October have) but I’m all for games not being hyped for 12+ months before release. Most of the hype of Shadow of Mordor has come in the last couple of months, as gamers have gotten their hands on it and reviews have started coming out. After Destiny, and Watch Dogs before it (and Titanfall come to think of it), it’s a nice change of pace to have a triple-A title be released and not see it every five minutes on TV, or to have spent the last year being told how much of a life changing experience it’s going to be. Shadow of Mordor arrived on shelves with a refreshing amount of hype. ![]()
